Korea’s Summer: From Seasonal Period to Consumer Season

Korea has traditionally divided seasons based on the 24 solar terms. Ipha (立夏), which signals the beginning of summer, falls in early May on the Gregorian calendar, and Mangjong (芒種), which heralds the onset of intense heat, falls in early June. Until the Joseon Dynasty, this period was the busiest seasonal time in agrarian society, with rice planting and barley harvesting overlapping, and summer preparation was primarily a matter of food and labor.

Restructuring of Summer in Modern Times

As urbanization progressed following Japanese colonial rule and liberation, summer shifted from its agricultural significance to become a season within the rhythm of daily life. With the growth of the textile and apparel industries in the 1960s-70s, seasonal cycles for summer clothing replacements emerged, and the concept of ‘summer season merchandise’ began taking root centered on department stores and markets.

After the 1990s, as sunscreen became widely available and air conditioning became commonplace, summer established itself as an independent consumer season. According to Korea Meteorological Administration statistics, the start of summer in Korea has advanced by more than two weeks on average compared to several decades ago, and average temperatures in early June have risen by 1-2 degrees compared to the 1980s. Accordingly, the timing of summer-related lifestyle demand has naturally shifted earlier as well.

After the 2010s, with the expansion of the pet industry and functional food market, the scope of the summer season extended beyond clothing and beauty to encompass pet supplies, weight management, and nutritional supplements. June now functions not merely as a seasonal turning point, but as the actual inflection point where Korea’s lifestyle across society transitions into summer mode.
