[Early July] Summer Vacation, Peak Season & Summer Wine — History and Origins

Historical Formation of Summer Vacation Season

In Europe, summer vacation culture began to institutionalize after the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, coinciding with discussions about workers’ right to rest. The UK enacted the Bank Holidays Act in 1871 to guarantee statutory holidays, and France formalized two weeks of annual paid vacation into law during the Léon Blum Cabinet in 1936. This prompted large-scale vacation migrations in August to become an annual practice in Western Europe. The peak season concentrated from late July to early August is the result of Northern Hemisphere climate conditions and national academic schedules aligning.

In Korea, summer vacation culture became popularized against the backdrop of economic growth and urbanization in the 1970s-80s. The period of Sambok (the three hottest periods) between mid-June and mid-July in the lunar calendar was traditionally viewed as a time to rest and escape the heat, and this practice naturally merged with the modern concept of summer peak season. After the complete liberalization of overseas travel in 1989, the scope of the July peak season gradually expanded from domestic vacation destinations to overseas travel destinations.

The Emergence and Cultural Spread of Summerween

Summerween is a portmanteau of summer and Halloween. It first began circulating through internet communities when the American animated series Gravity Falls (2012) featured an episode set on July 31st as a summer version of Halloween. Subsequently, combined with social media, it began connecting with actual consumer practices from the late 2010s onward, primarily in North America.

In Korea, Halloween culture began firmly establishing itself from the mid-2010s onward in urban commercial areas such as Hongdae and Itaewon. Summerween is building recognition among younger generations familiar with costumes and themed parties as a cultural extension of this trend, and is in the process of establishing itself as an independent seasonal cultural phenomenon distinct from October’s Halloween.
